Seed Saver ~ Pumpkin Seeds
Pumpkin Seed Saving by CJD.Sign |
Hi Sweet Friends,
We are saving seed for next year's planting.
Since we save most of our own seed, we take great care in seed preparation. This is important to keep mold growing on the seeds.
The pumpkins in the photo above are a "Pie" Pumpkin and a "Garden" Pumpkin. The Pie variety has more pumpkin flesh, fewer seeds, and is compact. Pie pumpkins are perfect for a small garden.
Seed Saving Directions:
Rinse #1 Wash all seeds to remove any plant material. |
Rince #2 Rinse in Cool water. |
Rinse #3 Briskly rinse the seeds. |
Remove any damaged, thin, or undeveloped seeds and give them to the chickens or put into the compost. |
Use a towel or a vented pan to air dry the seeds. Do Not cook these! They are for planting, not for eating, yet! |
Mix around seeds with your hand to help dry the seeds a couple times per day. |
This large pumpkin saved well enough to use for 4 pies and we saved 1/3 the seeds for toasting with salt and eating. The seeds saved were dried and stored completely dry. This took 5-7 days. |
