Warm Your House This Winter

Hi, Sweet Friends,

As the temperatures drop this winter, prepare your home with these hacks to warm it up.
Taking a bit of time to stop drafts in the Fall does help, but it's a bit late for that now. Don't give up though, these hacks you can do now to cozy up in your warm house this Winter.

1. Plastic Seal the Windows. There are kits available for this type of window treatment that keeps out the cold air. I have read that the large bubble wrap is good for this, too. I found some online at Amazon.com.

2. Place a Door Draft Stopper at the exterior doors of your house. You can buy these online or make one yourself. Here is a great tutorial for a DIY Door Draft Dodger by Martha Stewart.
You can make these for windows, too. They are great and can be filled with cat litter, dry rice, beans, or grains. Add a loop at one end so when you are done with them for the season, simply hang them on a hook in the closet or utility room.

3. Add heavy curtains to the windows. Here is a pair from Bed, Bath, and Beyond. called Spellbound Pinch-Pleat 84-Inch Rod Pocket Lined Window Curtain Panel in Pewter that gives you the idea of what type I am talking about.
Take down those Spring sheers and wash & dry them. Fold and put them in a box marked, "Spring Sheers". Hang the heavy curtains and keep them closed. Open them when the sun hits the windows to let the warmth in. Be sure to close them when the sun goes down.

4. Bake something yummy in the oven. Remarkably, our oven pitches enough heat to warm this tiny home. Baking a batch of cookies or a pie will not only warm the house but will also fill the stomach!  When you are done baking, turn off the oven and crack the door open. This lets the heat into the house and not up to the exhaust vent. 

5. In the Summer or Fall, caulk the windows and frames. This will help cozy the house when winter comes. There are kits with strips of felt or sticky foam that work great on the door frames.

6. Turn your ceiling fans on with the switch making the blade go the opposite way. This brings down the heat. Be sure to keep it on LOW setting or the motor may burn out. This has worked for us with all these high 8 foot ceilings and keeps the house toasty.
