Fall Garden Ideas and Chores

Hi, Sweet Friends,

These are some chores for September. I do apologize that when I started the post in 2019, I did not link it up and can't find the original post to link to. That being said, I have included what I can remember from the Homesteading Chores that were recommended for September.

Look at the link below for the Hardiness Zone in your area.

USDA Hardiness Zone Map

For the Western Slope of Colorado, we are in USDA Zone 5

The Average Low Temperatures:
  • -20 to -15F in zone 5a
  • -15 to -10F in zone 5b

Here are some suggested chores for the Homestead.
September, October, November Homesteading – Farm Chores

  • Allow livestock out on pasture
  • Watch for hot spells and cold snaps this month
  • Prepare chicken coop and barn for winter
  • Consider using deep litter bedding method to heat the barn for winter; for chicken house, too
  • Put up livestock feed for winter
  • Assess feed supplies to ensure they will last through winter
  • Begin to butcher or sell extra livestock
  • Check fence lines for damage and signs of predators
  • Harvest field crops as they ripen and weather allows
  • Cut, split, and store firewood
  • Work on building projects when the weather allows

September, October, November Homesteading –

Garden Chores

  • Tend to your cool-season crops in cold frames
  • Clean out tool shed for winter storage
  • Make sure garden hoses and tools are cleaned, sharpened, and put away for winter
  • Clean out the greenhouse and prepare it for winter
  • Cultivate and irrigate garden crops as needed
  • Water new trees, shrubs, and perennials as needed
  • Harvest fruits and vegetables as they ripen
  • Mulch garden crops, trees, shrubs, perennials, and annuals to prevent moisture loss from soil
  • Water newly planted trees, shrubs, and perennials as needed
  • Preserve the harvest by canning, freezing, and dehydrating
  • Cover tender crops when frost threatens
  • Plant Garlic & Onions
  • Add compost to the top layer of empty raised beds, turn it in and add a winter cover crop
  • Begin storing crops in the root cellar and check often for signs of decay
This is a shortlist, we know there are more things to do and get done before winter sets in.
Planning ahead will make next spring much easier for your garden adventures.

It is my desire to help pass the information on to others that will educate and ease the gardening process.
