Can You Grow Potatoes in Bags?

Our 2020 Garden & Chicken Run

We have been growing in these grain/food bags this year. We saw Monty Don, from Gardener's World on BBC, grow potatoes in bags and we thought we would give it a go.
Take a look at the video tutorial or follow the photos below for instructions!

Below, I have taken pictures of how we grew our potatoes and will update this post when the potatoes are done in September.
We have used 1 chicken feed bag and 1 dog food bag to grow our potatoes this year.
We filled the bottoms of the bags about 4inches up. Roll down the bag tops and unroll them as the potatoes grow up.
Our planting medium is a mix of topsoil mix from the local New Castle Gardens and Miracle Grow Garden Mix.

The Miracle Grow Garden Mix is not recommended for pots without the addition of the topsoil. The reason is that the Miracle Grow Garden Mix is larger composted materials and they don't hold the water needed in pots. It is recommended to be used in the garden direct in the soil.

Our Garden Pot Mix
We are growing 2 types of potatoes this year.
We started with Seed Potatoes in Yukon Gold and Red Norland.
Plant 3 or 5 seed potatoes in each bag, depending on the size.
Plant them so that all the potato is covered.
Make sure all the potaotes are covrered and just the top greens are showing.
Fill up with soil above the potato skins.

***NOTE*** Green potatoes are poisonous, so plant them under the soil mix! If they start to come up, add more soil mix to cover at least 1 inch above the potatoes after watering.
The Red Norlands are in the red dog food bag and the Yukon Gold potatoes are in the "vibrant" chicken feed bag above.
Make sure to put drain slits in the bottom of the bag for drainage.
As the flowers come on the potatoes, the potatoes will be forming down in the bag. For an early harvest, dig potatoes when the flowers die. Late potatoes, dig them when the greenery dies.

Our portable potted garden has really bloomed out. We have enjoyed having a garden this year so that we can bring it wherever we end up. We are still in "transit" and are looking to go further West. We just don't know where yet! It's exciting!
