Living Tee Pees And Tunnels
Hi, Sweet Friend,
Have you thought about a Living Tee Pee? They are so much FUN!
We have had these in all of our gardens since living in Colorado.
Our 2013 Garden in Rifle, Colorado.
Our Teepee was placed at the end of the garden path between the Terrace Garden and the Maze Garden.
We used Yard Long Beans, Kentucky Wonder Beans for this Tee Pee that went over the pathway. The beans were so long that they hit us as we walked through. So we made a teepee that was not open like this one, in our next gardens. We also made A-Frame structures, like the one in the photo below.
Green Bean Tunnel in Gardens of 2015-2018 (Gardens 2019-2020 were potted gardens).
Greenbeans get lots of sun and airflow. There is no molding and no plant cramping. The plants put out tall runners filled with beans and flowers. On the outside of each frame, we plant bush style beans to fill in the gaps and keep out the weeds.
We planted in raised bed planters so the frame had some extra stability when the beans were on the vines. These vines went as high as 14 feet! The had to be picked by a ladder in the late Summer.
2017 Dickenson Garden we moved the frames and used other plants in crop rotation and companion planting.
I found this one on Pinterest and have used it with runner beans, yard long beans, and love the results. The style is planted in pots with the bamboo poles tied in the middle creating the Tee Pee. It is very similar to how the Native American's Tee Pees are set up.

The pole beans were too heavy with the winds to stay up. We used the wooden "A" frames all of the following years in the garden. It may be better for the pea fence.

We have such fun and enjoyment out of our gardens. We do hope you will try something new in your garden this year! Why not try a Tee Pee or Tunnel that is living and giving?

| At the end of Winter, the garden looks really rough. The teepee will be stripped of the old plant matter and the chickens will make it into compost in a very short time. |
Enjoy!
