We Need To Teach Digital Civility
The day started out like any other day. Melissa had gathered all her hopes upon going to the dance with the new boy in school, Brad.
It was around lunchtime that the other kids in the class started giggling and pointing at Melissa. Melissa had no idea what was happening until one of her friends came up to her and showed her the meme. It was of Brad laughing with the popular girls about Melissa.
This meme was then sent around the high school. Melissa was devastated. She wanted to know why Brad had acted like that with those popular girls. How could they all be so mean? Melissa was crushed.
Has this type of cyberbullying happened to you or someone you know? There are worse cases, but this one ended with just hurt feelings. Some end in death. Some people have committed suicide over this cyberbullying and we need to teach Digital Civility.
We see bullying everywhere now, people call it debating, arguing, but it has become too evident as to what it really is. IT IS BULLING. If you don't agree, you are bullied.
We are seeing this in the news with fake news, bots, and trolls that are posting news to stir up the people. It is to divide us and not to unite us.
Politics is getting so bad that there are people who are paid to bully at rallies, at the voting polls, and in the neighborhood pubs. They are wherever they can cause the most havoc. It isn't right, but it is the truth of what is happening now.
Digital Civility is needed to calm down this already explosive subject. People are getting hurt and some are dying just to escape it.
We need to come together as concerned people against this behavior.
I feel we need to not be targeted for bullies. My own daughter attempted suicide because she was bullied until she tried to take her own life. I just want this all to stop. I want these people to stop this bullying. People can be mean. There are no laws on the books anywhere about people being uncivil, but if we stay civil, if we educate others we can make a change. It is not teasing, it is not all fun and games.

We can't see the uncivility sometimes. And sometimes people are just downright mean. As humans, we need to realize that we can't change others, you can change yourself. Be civil. Walk away. Remove those people from your friend's list (so to speak).
The bottom line is that we all need to communicate without bullying.
