St. Patrick's Cathedral in NYC and The Christmas Nativity Scene
Today is a special Guest Post from my Sweet Cousin, Natalie Russell. She took a trip up to New York City to get some gorgeous photos of St. Patrick's Cathedral and the Nativity Creche. Natalie has so kindly allowed me to share them with you.
This Photo Shoot is of
St. Patrick's Cathedral in NYC. The Cathedral is located at St. Patrick’s Cathedral
5th Avenue between 50th/51st Streets
New York, NY
"The spires were added in 1888, and at 329 feet and 6 inches (100.4 meters) were the tallest structures in New York City and the second highest in the United States." Wickipedia.org HERE.
The grand exterior is made of marble with high arches and large stained glass windows. Each of the cathedrals bronze front doors weighs 9,200 pounds and can be opened easily with one hand.
The high marble arches inside the cathedral are 110feet high. "The Cathedral of St. Patrick is a decorated Neo-Gothic-style Roman Catholic cathedral church in the United States and a prominent landmark of New York City." ~ Wikipedia
The history of St. Patrick's Cathedral HERE
Outbuildings and a school (no longer there) were added in the 1880s. Expansion and renovations also occurred in stages from 1880-1931 with the addition of the large circular stained glass window in the front of the church called the Rose Window.
The building of the cathedral started in 1858, was halted during the Civil War, and resumed building in 1865.
"At its center is the cathedral sanctuary, holding the main altar covered by a 57-foot bronze canopy called a Baldacchino." ~ Walks of New York
Under this High Altar, there is a crypt where Archbishops, Cardinals, and a few high ranking men of the church are intombed.
The restoration was done, on the Cathedral of St. Patrick, from 2012 - 2015. The much-needed cleaning from decades of soot and decay was done on both the inside and the outside the cathedral. The ceilings, windows, woodwork, and floors, as well as other damage from age, was repaired, painted, and improved.
The white marble and rich wooden details throughout the Cathedral of St. Patrick is ornate, intricate, and all done by hand. A real-life monument to the craftsmanship and skill done by the artists who created this elaborate masterpiece.
"St. Patrick’s is the focal point of three of NYC’s most cherished holiday traditions – midnight mass on Christmas Eve, the St. Patrick’s Day Parade (the world’s largest), and the Easter Parade." ~
The Nativity Creche is put up each year at Christmas Time. The addition of the yellow Labrador Retriever, Lexington, was added by Father Ritchie after his beloved pup died shortly before Christmas. "This is a Christmas story about a priest and his dog — and it is the heartwarming tale of this year’s holiday season." ~ Omar, who wrote this tender story for the New York Post.
The Holy Family with the Shepherds and sheep, the animals, and the Heavenly Angel look on the empty creche during the Christmas Season.
The anticipation of the empty creche is the main focus of the Nativity before the arrival of Jesus on Christmas Day.
Enjoy scrolling through the beautiful photos, taken by Natalie Russell, of this Nativity.
"The cathedral and associated buildings were declared a National Historic Landmark in 1976."
