Color In The Garden ~ Around Towns ~

Hi, Sweet Friends,

I love a mix of color in the garden. We interplant as well as companion plant our vegetable, herb, and flower gardens. We also use plants for pest control and color.

Around the Western Slope of Colorado, is Zone 5, USA Zone Map, we have a shorter growing season. Our "Last Frost" date is on May 11th. Last Frost Map
Below is a chart for the "First Frost", First Frost Map, ours happens to be on October 2nd. Hardiness Zone Map
Now that we have established the times to plant, let us take a look at Color in the Garden. Colors can come from flowers, vegetables, herbs, fruits, and trees. Take a look at some Colors I collected in my Pinterest Collection, "Colors In The Garden". Click the link to see some ideas.

These garden ideas are mainly from gardens I have grown. A few are from Pinterest. I hope you can find some inspiration for your own Colorful Gardens. These Colorful Flowers in the area Gardens are simply beautiful!

Yellow/Orange Dahlias

Burgandy Dahlia

These are Dahlias and they come in a variety of gorgeous colors. They are Annuals and are hardy in warm areas. For our area, The Rocky Mountains, we collect the seeds and bring in the potted up plants to overwinter them.
These are the yellow/orange Dahlias mixed in with Basil, Lettuce, Chamomile, and Thyme.
Coral Bells add a touch of light crimson red to the landscape. These also have a feathery leaf that looks great next to this evergreen bush.
This pink Tea Rose looks wonderful next to the small grove of Aspen Trees.
PinkGeraniums
Red Geraniums

Colorful Geraniums look great in any landscape. They give a pop of color to a bland corner or flank them in pots at the front door.

In a Vegetable Garden, the greens can be planted so they compliment each other. The Brussel sprouts, in front, are matched with the feathery leaves of the Tomato Plants.  To the left front are the Zucchini plants and they are backed by the Tomatoes & Kentucky Wonder Pole Beans. The Corn to the right is interplanted with the large SunFlowers. The combinations are pretty and interesting.
The little touches of color look very pretty between these steps.
This waterfall garden has an array of colorful foliage and flowers.
Bulbs offer a pop of color anywhere you plant them. They look wonderful in pots and in the landscape!
The Beans are grown with the Bush Beans at the ends and in front of the tall Pole Beans. This keeps color all the growing season and new beans continually growing.
On the other side of the Bean planter, we've planted the squashes. They have large leaves so it is good to give them lots of growing space. They look wonderful next to the beans.
The Squash gives a pop of yellow in a sea of green.
The Squash Flowers are yellow as well as the fruit.
Columbine, 'Red'. These are low maintenance and they reseed themselves very prolifically.

Celosia, 'Fresh Look Red'.
Crabapple Trees are great for a pop of color. They bloom in pink, white, or red. Even the fruit looks pretty on a Crabapple Tree. They are a great addition to the small or large garden.
Coneflowers come in all colors and are a beautiful addition to the garden. These are perennial flowers and will come back bigger and more beautiful each year.

Lettuce is a wonderful addition to any garden. They come in many colors, some even red! Put them in between other vegetables for height variations or plant them in a border for an edible element. I do this with my herb garden and the lettuce is a great addition. By fall, I let the lettuce go to seed and pick it for the next years planting.

Lemon Balm adds a wonderful fragrance to the garden. The flowers look like poofs on a spike. Plant close to an element in the garden like this rock. It will really make them stand out.
 HERBS

Adding different plants in groupings adds a great variety to the garden. The Alyssum looks great with the Flax that blooms in tiny blue flowers.
Chamomile looks so pretty in this garden. The feathery leaves and white flowers with their yellow centers are so beautiful!
Basil comes in a variety of flavors and colors. This is Garden Basil. It is long growing and has a broad leaf. Very tasty.

This is Purple 'Opal' Basil. It grows into a nice fragrant bush. This one is budding out to flower. I picked off the flower tops to encourage fuller plants.
Alyssum is always a sweet addition to the garden. This is 'Carpet of Snow' and it makes a grand showing from July thru October in Western Colorado.

I really love the 'Wave' Petunias. They become full and round. They continue in "waves" of color all Summer. Keep them deadheaded for more prolific blooming.

Pansies are always a great addition to any garden. They love the cool weather and you can let them go to seed for a garden surprise the next year. These are called, 'Viola Tri-Color" or "Johnny Jump Ups".

Add strawberries to the landscape. This makes for a delicious edible garden.
This year, try some new varieties of flowers & herbs that will put a pop of color into your gardens!
  Enjoy!
