Dickinson Gardens

Pole Bean Garden Boxes - CJD.Sign
Hi, Sweet Friends,
Old seed poster

It is Spring and time to start planting the Gardens here in Colorado. To begin with, we have themed our gardens by what they grow. Hence, we have a Tomato Garden, Beans, and Squash Garden. This year we wanted to do something different. We practice crop rotation and this type of Theme Gardening allows for planting different varieties of plants in these rotating locations.

What is a Dickinson Garden? Well, with some digging, it is an Heirloom Garden with old varieties of plants and seeds that are proven heirloom varieties.
Uses for Gourds

So, with that in mind, we planned each box and location to accommodate the desired plants and seeds to create this Dickinson Garden Theme. All of these plant photos are on my Pinterest 2018 Dickinson Garden.
Pumpkin

Our first new planting variety is called Dickinson Pumpkin from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds. This Pumpkin is more of the color of a squash, but it is reviewed as delicious for pie, soup, and muffins.

The second pumpkin we chose was the Blue-Grey variety called Jarrahdale Pumpkin from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds. This unique colored squash is a savory tasting pumpkin, a good keeper, and fun to display.

The third, and last, a variety of pumpkin is the pie pumpkin called New England Sugar Baby Pumpkin from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds. This variety is a sweet flesh superb for pies.

Our next new planting variety is called Table King Bush Squash from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds. This Winter Squash is a non-stringy variety that grows 8 fruits per bush. Compact and with a punch!
Cabbage

The Cabbages are some of our favorites. With two varieties in the garden, these will get us through the Winter. The Early Jersey Wakefield is a small conical cabbage that is early and flavorful. Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds. And the second cabbage is Premium Late Flat Dutch for a Fall harvest. These cabbages grow 10-15 lbs! And they are great for storage and later use.

Then next seed we will be trying is called Yellow of Parma Onion from Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds. A rare Italian onion variety that is a good keeper.

Next on the list are beans. We love growing our own green beans and putting them on the climbing frame makes for easy picking. This year we are choosing two varieties. One a purple bean called Purple Podded Pole Beans that have a beautiful lavender purple flower and long fleshy bean pod. This variety was discovered in the Ozark Mountains. Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds.

The other variety we chose for this year is our favorite Blue Lake Bush that has tender pods and high volume per bush. Baker Creek Heirloom Seeds.
Carrots
So, this year's garden will be a new and exciting challenge. The new varieties of Heirloom Seeds we have chosen will be delightful in the garden and on the table. Do join us in learning of these new vegetable plants!

Happy Planting!
Enjoy!
