Why Do Chickens Molt?

Hi, Sweet Friends,

The chickens are to bed and it is a dark night sky with no moon. Every night I pop out to count the girls. Tonight they are evenly spaced to roost, but last night there were 4 girls on the bottom roost and 6 girls squished on the top.

Our 10 Sister Chicks are molting and they all look a fright. They also slow down on laying during the molt.

We have 3 Easter Eggers, 2 Reds, 1 Bard Rock, 1 Polish feather top, 1 Partridge Rock, 1 Lankenvelder, and 1 Andalucia Blue. They are all beautiful when not molting.

  What is molting?

Molting is
The chickens lose their feathers in weird locations and sometimes all over. During this time, they don't lay many eggs. It can last weeks or months. And none of them have the same molting pattern.

See the second on the top bar? "Monster Truck Grave Digger" is losing them around her neck. The one next to her, Flapper, is losing her feathers all over. Henny Penny is the white & black one, she is losing tail & neck feathers. Next to her is Shark, she is molting on the neck and some of her under feathers. The first one on the top (I skipped her) is Princess, she is losing the feathers all over, and her top plume feathers are falling out also. My poor baby Princess looks a terrible sight!!

On the second row, Spice is losing her fanny feathers, hence why her butt is red. Next is Snow Flake, she will molt next year when she is 2 yrs old. Next is Burn, she is molting all over and so is Blue Bell, who is next to Burn. On the end is Coco Shadow, she will molt next year when she is also 2 years old. Here is a great article that helped us understand more about molting: https://www.communitychickens.com/chickens-molting-winter/
