Checklist for a Clean Bathroom

Cleaning the Kitchen Checklist. CJD.Sign
My list of cleaning equipment & cleaners:
Rubber Gloves
A Bleach Cleaner (use first)
A Glass Cleaner    (use second)
A Floor Cleaner    (use last)
A Scrubbing Brush
A Tooth Brush
Mop/Swiffer Sweeper type
5 Clean Soft Cloths (one for each job to eliminate cross-contamination of cleaners)
Paper towels (for the mirrors and chrome surfaces)
 1. Clean the Tub & Shower.
Remove all the items in the tub/shower surround. We have a shower chair that is removed while cleaning, the bathmat, shampoos, conditioner, body washes, and soaps.
Remove the towels, rugs, shower scrubbies (netted body scrubbers).
Remove the bottles and anything else in the bath area. (I put all the bottles in the sink to wash off the soap residue
and dry them with a paper towel).
Open a window or turn on the bathroom fan before starting to spray the bleach cleaner. Spray from the top of the walls or surround to the bottom of the drain with the bleach cleaner. With the soft green scrubber, scrub the walls and the tub in a circular motion from the top to the bottom of the walls and the tub.
Spray the entire area with cool water to rinse off the cleaner, and wipe it down to dry, again with 1 of the clean cloths dampened with water.
With 1 soft cloth, spray the cloth with bleach cleaner and wipe off the outer side of the tub or shower surround. If you have a glass surround, use a glass cleaner instead of the bleach cleaner. DO NOT mix the two cleaners. This causes a toxic gas. Use separate cloths for each cleaner. *Use the bleach cleaner first. Then after all bleach cleaning, go back with the glass cleaner and clean the mirrors, light fixtures, and any chrome.

Wash the shower curtain in the washer on cold, gentle, and with a mild washing soap.
While the curtain is washing, take a soft cloth and the glass cleaner and wipe down the curtain rod and curtain rings. I take the rod and rings to the kitchen to do this part.  Rehang the rod. Replace the curtain rings, and place the wet curtain on the rings to dry.

2. Clean the Toilet.
Tackling the toilet is not as scary a job as it seems. I start with the outside while I have put the cleaner to soak in the inside bowl. Use the bleach cleaner and spray the whole toilet, seat, and lid. Use 1 soft cloth and clean around the toilet tank, then around the whole bowl and lastly wipe over the lid, seat, and rim of the bowl.

Clean the bowl with a toilet wand/scrubber on a stick. Clean the under the rim, inside of the bowl, and the then scrub the drain hole. Flush the toilet to rinse the cleaner away. Immediately wash the toilet wand/scrubber with spray bleach cleaner. Rinse well and let air dry.

3. Clean the Shelving, Picture Frames, & items.
Remove all the of the items off the shelves, one shelf at a time. These little cloth baskets work wonderfully for keeping like items contained. And it is a breeze to clean the shelves!

Wipe down the bottles with cleaner on the cloth.
Removed items one shelf at a time. Wipe down items, wipe out shelf.
Replace items when the shelving is dry.
4. Clean the Sink & Cabinets.
Remove all the items off the sink top, counter, and mirror. Spray with the bleach cleaner. Wipe down the sink, counter, and front of the sink (ours has a bowl front).

Spray cleaner on the cabinet. Ours has a gloss finish and the glass cleaner works well. Use the toothbrush for the small crevasses and corners.  Use a soft cloth to wipe down the cabinet.
*Once a month, with non-bleach spray cleaner(use a glass cleaner) wipe down the inside of the sink cabinet. Wipe over the bottles and exposed pipes. This keeps the dust and dirt at bay!
It looks nice and shiny! Love it!
Now, if you have a stool like ours, spray it with bleach cleaner and wipe it down with a soft cloth. Paper towels are not a good thing to use on this rough surface as they shred.

Wipe down the items that go on the sink top/counter top and replace them. My mother in law puts trash in the light, don't know why, but I clean out that too. I use a glass cleaner when it is UNPLUGGED. I clean the whole lamp, the bulb, and the cord. When it is dry I put the light back in and plug it into the outlet.

5. Clean the Mirrors, light fixtures & all Chrome.
I use this Glass Cleaner, I like that it stays where sprayed, and doesn't leave huge streaks. I am also allergic to ammonia. It has no ammonia-like windex does.
Spray the mirror. Wipe with Paper Toweling in a circular motion. Then using the same cloth, wipe from top to bottom the whole mirror. Then wipe around the edges of the mirror.
Kinda of hard to show, but I hope you get the idea.
It looks good and keeps the shine for days. If you have a messy bathroom person...this mirror may have to be cleaned more than once a week. Best time to do this is after a shower when the mirror is steamy. *TIP: use a dryer sheet to wipe it down and the mirror won't fog up as much.

6. Empty the Trash & clean the Trash Can.
Take out the trash from the can. Wash out the can in a bit of water, spray with the bleach cleaner, and scrub with soft green scrubby (Scotch Brand) inside and outside of trash can. Then use the 1 soft dry cloth to dry the trash can. I do this in the kitchen; there is more space than in my tiny bathroom.
Place 3 or 4 empty bags in the bottom of the trash can for the next trash can clean out. Now, take a rubber band, like above, put it halfway through the handles on the bag. Loop one end of the rubber band into the other end of the rubber band, with the bag, handles in the middle of the rubber band, and pull to make a loop knot. Easy to remove and reuse. Keeps the bag snuggly in the trash can.
7. Clean the walls, trim, switches, outlets, and doors.
Now that the major part of the bathroom is cleaned, with the bleach cleaner, spray and wipe down the walls, outlets, doors, window frames, and the outlets & light switches. Don't forget to wipe down the trims, too.
Mop the floor with cleaner diluted in water in a bucket. Start at the furthest corner and work your way to the door. Let this dry before walking on it. Ask anyone home during your cleaning to use the bathroom before you do the floors to avoid the look of my floor above.

8. Pretty up the Bathroom.
Now replace the shower curtain to air dry. Replace the bag lined trash can. Replace the clean dry rugs. Add freshly washed towels, hand towels, and washcloths. Replace the toilet paper with a fresh roll and make a point with the endpaper, like at the hotel. See the diagram below.
This shows that the bathroom has been freshly cleaned.

Complete Bathroom Cleaning Checklist from Real Simple
This is the best checklist I have found online that most closely follows my cleaning routine. Real Simple has an App for the cell phone for this.

*PS My Mother-in-Law has dementia. This is why there are sticky notes, with instructions, taped to the walls. They help her remember.
