DIY Journal ~ Part 2 Journal Cover

DIY Journal Cover ~ CJD.Sign
Hi, Sweet Friends,
This is Part 2 of the Journal Cover DIY.
The first is a bit of recap and you can find the Journal Cover Part 1 HERE
Take the journal/Composition Notebook and make sure all the pages are secured by flipping through the pages.
We will start with a basic cover. The materials list is in DIY Journal~ Part 1 Journal Cover HERE

This journal is 9.75 x 7.5 and we will be using large 12x12 Scrap Book Papers.
I chose a darker nondescript paper for the back cover.Flip journal over so the back cover is up. Start by folding a portion, I used 1 inch,on the back covers inside edge (left side arrows in picture) and crease the fold, tucking the paper inside the back of the book. Wrap the rest of the paper around the right side/binding of the journal, as seen above on the right side. Do not crease.
Flip the journal to the front, as shown above. This will be glued where the word "fold" is on the right/back inside cover. Fold over 1 inch of the back paper on the left side to create a "binding" effect. Crease the fold. The arrows in the photo show how it will look.
Take the patterned papers and choose one for your front cover. This will be where the cardboard mat will be glued to, so I chose a pretty pattern and colored paper. But not something like this postcard print above. This postcard print paper will go on the inside back cover later in the DIY instructions.

Trim the papers (both front and back) 1 inch at the bottom and 1 inch at the top of the journal book. Center both covers on the book like in the photo above.
Glue the back paper flap showing on the left. Open the crease and use the glue stick down the flap side and stick together as shown by the red arrows.
Glue with the Tacky Glue along the folded edge of the back cover that comes around to the front cover. Let it sit with the glue on the flap for about 1 minute and fold over and press onto the front cover paper.
While the glue is setting, fold the front paper edge over the inside of the front cover (it will be longer and used as a pocket later in the tutorial) and crease on the right side. Slide the creased flap inside the front of the cover.
Open the front cover and look to see that all the paper edges are sealed, as show above in the picture.
Don't worry about the glue ripples, they will not be seen when the glue is fully dry.
Close-Up of the inside cover glued.

Front Cover
Fold over paper front cover onto the journal front and tuck in the creased fold. Your cover should look similar to the one in this photo above. (Front) See the photo above, the right side has a paper fold on the front and back covers now.
Back Cover
Next, take the front cover flap and fold 1 inch as shown in the photo below. Do NOT glue this yet! Press crease. Mine is laying on the cover to show, it is NOT glued yet. And will not be glued to the front cover, but to itself to make a nice seamed edge.
Fold paper inside and crease. Below, fold 1 inch of that extra paper to create a nice seam.
Fold the 1inch to the paper at the crease and glue with glue stick. See photo above. Do NOT glue the front flap to the front cover just yet! Flip the journal over.
Back Cover

Glue the back cover to the journal NOW (see the black arrows). Then fold the edges of the back and front cover up towards the journal and crease. See the red arrows. Crease and unfold.
Make a slit at the bottom on the journal as shown above, before and after the middle binding. Do NOT nip it off. Do the same to the top of the journal middle binding paper.
Refold the crease and glue the back flap down as show by the arrows in the above photo. This back will be covered by more scrapbook papers and will have a back pocket.
Flip the journal to the front and lay the front cover open. See photo above.
Repeat the same instructions to the front as done to the back.
Take the small slit and fold it under, as see above, left, tan on the white paper and under the journal black binding. Refresher as you see the glued back of the journal, above right photo.

Lay open the front cover, as show above. Fold the front cover inside flaps as shown. Crease the folds, but Do NOT glue yet!

It will look like this above. Make the creases like this.
Then open the front inside cover so it looks like below, and refold and crease flap and edges as shown below.
Open and refold like above. Recrease the folds.
Fold over front flap as this will become a pocket later in the tutorial.
Glue the bottom and top flap edges as shown above with the glue stick. *NOTE* put glue only to the folded flap (Pocket). See below photos where edge is lifted slightly to show that flap area is not glued.
Fold and press to secure the glued edge.
Fold over flap "pocket" as show below.
Let set about 10 minutes to make sure glued areas are set.

This patterned paper is an 8 x 10 sheet. Cut 1/3 away (keep for later) and use the larger piece for the inside book cover. This will go directly onto the front inside cover. For a 12 x 12 piece of patterned paper, simply cut in half from top to bottom and use the best side of the paper. This design had a butterfly that matched the one I am putting on the final front cover.
Cut with sisors 1/3 of the paper width off. This will be your choice of patterned paper.
Your cut piece should look like this, above.
Fold the bottom end, press, and glue with a glue stick.
 Glue stick on all edges.
Place glue side down and press into place on the front inside cover.
Place front cover onto book by sliding it into the cover like above.
Mine ripped a bit (see bottom binding edge above) but don't worry if it does. This will be glued again when the ribbon place marker is added.
The inside pocket is finished! Allow this to dry before going on to the third tutorial. And before you put a card or not in. It may get stuck in the glue!
This little pocket is great for  tucking in a little not or a card.
I made this "Paris" card for Granddaughter's Birthday!

That's it for the second post.
Here is the link for the first post: LINK
Stay tuned...
The third post is coming shortly!
Enjoy!
God Bless You!
