Growing Tomatoes - Monday Mayhem

Hi Everyone!
Today we are talking Tomato!!

Tomatoes are such a versatile fruit, YES, Fruit! But the fruit is used as a vegetable. Tomatoes Botanical Name is Lycopersicon esculentum. Tomato is a "Nightshade".

"...often red fruit / berry of the nightshade Solanum lycopersicum, commonly known as a tomato plant." From Wikipedia.
The Montrose Tomato Company in Montrose, Colorado   http://www.montrosetomato.com/
is an informative site for local vegetable growers as well as Organic Food Lovers!! Check them out for great detailed information on many tomato varieties.
Where should tomatoes be planted?
Plant tomatoes where they will receive 6 to 8 hours of sunlight a day.
Plant tomatoes in open ground away from shade of trees.

What soil should tomatoes be grown in?
Tomatoes love a PH soil of around 6.0 to 6.8. The pH is a measure of soil acidity or alkalinity. The acidic/alkaline amount in the soil is important for the tomato to grow healthy.

On the pH scale, 7.0 is neutral; so the range which tomatoes prefer is slightly on the acid side.

Can I side dress my Tomatoes with pine to increase the acidic pH level?
Yes, it is good to side  dress your plants mid-summer with compost and lawn clippings. For tomatoes it is good to also add pine needles.

3 good ways to grow tomatoes

 1. Use raised bed gardens filled with a good soil-mix or
       grow tomatoes in containers.
   2. Dig a hole and fill with soil-mix (loamy mixture like compost, chicken or mushroom compost and soil)
   3. Make a mound of good soil, and plant into the mound.

Tomatoes are easy to grow with a little love and care.
